For Ukraine – its exhausted, courageous troopers, its 1000’s of bereaved households mourning their lifeless, and its beleaguered president – it’s precisely what they feared it could be.
They concern the compromise they are going to be compelled to make will probably be messy, expensive, unfair and in the end useful to the invading tyrant who introduced demise and destruction to their sovereign land.
Six weeks in the past, I spoke to President Zelenskyy in London.
War latest: Team Trump ‘risk being out of their depth’ at Putin meeting
I put it to him in our Sky Information interview that Presidents Trump and Putin had been heading in the direction of making a deal between themselves, a grand discount, by which Ukraine was however one piece on the chess board.
Zelenskyy smiled as if to acknowledge the truth forward.
He paused after which he stated this: “We aren’t going to be a card in talks between nice nations, and we are going to by no means settle for that… I positively don’t wish to see world offers between America and Russia.
“We do not want it. We’re a separate story, a sufferer of Russian aggression and we is not going to reward it.”
It was a response that betrayed his biggest concern – that this can develop into primarily a Trump negotiation by which Zelenskyy and Ukraine will probably be informed “take it or depart it”.
And, by the way in which, should you “depart it”, then it is going to be painful.
Harsh realities
It is the prospect that now confronts Zelenskyy as Trump and Putin plough forward on a course that has clear points of interest for each of them.
In fact, Zelenskyy is correct to say there could be no deal with out Ukraine. However there are harsh realities at play right here.
President Trump needs a deal on Ukraine – any deal – that he can chalk up as a win. He needs it badly and he needs it now.
It is the obstacle to a broader strategic take care of Putin and he needs it out of the way in which. It is what he does, and it is the way in which he does it. And President Putin is aware of it.
He is aware of Trump, he sees a possibility in Trump, and he cannot get throughout Russia to Alaska quick sufficient. He will probably be again at world diplomacy’s prime desk.
All the time a deal to be accomplished
Make no mistake, when Trump says he simply needs to cease the killing, he means it. Such wanton lack of younger lives offends him. He retains saying it.
He sees struggle, by and enormous, as an pointless waste of life and of cash. Offers are there to be accomplished. There’s all the time a deal.
Sadly for Ukraine, on this case, it’s unlikely to be a good deal.
How can any deal be “honest” if you find yourself the sufferer of outrageous brutality and heinous crimes.

However it could be the deal they need to take except they wish to battle an more and more one-sided struggle with a lot much less assist from President Trump and America.
A senior UK diplomat informed me if issues end up as feared, it shouldn’t be referred to as a land-for-peace deal. It needs to be referred to as annexation “as a result of that is what it’s”.
However here is the rub.
Peace, calm, the top of the nightly terror of struggle has a lot to suggest it. In brief, a nasty peace can typically appear higher than no peace. However, in the end, rewarded dictators all the time come again for extra.
If Ukraine has to simply accept a nasty peace, then it should need clear safety ensures to ensure it can’t occur once more.
It’s the very least they deserve.
There may be a lot at stake in Alaska.
