New Caledonia unrest, one year on: A healthcare system in tatters

France’s abroad territory of New Caledonia is dealing with a rising disaster. The variety of healthcare employees has dropped dramatically, notably because the unrest of Could 2024. In response, authorities are providing incentives – akin to annual contracts and free lodging – to draw medical doctors and nurses again to the island. However within the meantime, volunteers are stepping in to coach locals in fundamental medical care, as clinics and hospitals throughout the island stay closed because of workers shortages. Our France 2 colleagues report, with FRANCE 24’s Guillaume Gougeon.
