Federal Communications Commission Chair Brendan Carr on Wednesday denied the federal government censored CBS “Late Present” host Stephen Colbert after the community forbid him from airing an interview with a U.S. Senate candidate earlier this week.
“There was no censorship right here in any respect,” Carr instructed reporters.
As an alternative of censorship, Carr blamed Texas state Rep. James Talarico (D) of committing a “hoax” associated to CBS not airing his interview.
“You had a Democrat candidate who understood the best way the information media works and he took benefit of your entire, kind of, prior conceptions, to run a hoax, apparently for the aim of elevating cash and getting clicks,” Carr claimed. “And the information media performed proper into it.”
The “hoax” declare doesn’t look like factually supported, nevertheless: Colbert first introduced up the censorship to his viewers Monday, not Talarico.
“We have been instructed in no unsure phrases by our community’s attorneys ― who known as us instantly ― that we couldn’t have [Talarico] on the published,” Colbert stated Monday.
“Then I used to be instructed, in some unsure phrases, that not solely may I not have him on, I couldn’t point out me not having him on,” Colbert added. “And since my community clearly doesn’t need us to speak about this, let’s discuss this.”

Colbert proceeded to explain that the FCC, below Carr, has threatened to require late evening TV speak reveals to offer equal time to each political candidate in a race, and it seems CBS determined to conform prematurely. (Notably, Trump’s FCC has not threatened to apply the same rule to right-wing speak radio.)
“Now, as I stated, at this level, he’s simply launched a letter that claims he’s fascinated with removing the exception for late evening,” Colbert stated. “He hasn’t executed away with it but, however my community is unilaterally imposing it as if he had … however I need to guarantee you, this resolution is for purely monetary causes.”
Colbert accused CBS of caving to threats on Monday, saying the community instructed him to not interview Talarico on his present.
Colbert stated CBS discouraged Talarico as a visitor, seemingly fearing the FCC would impose an equal-time rule that hasn’t beforehand been used for late-night speak reveals. Talarico is operating towards Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) within the Democratic main for a U.S. Senate seat.
Talarico’s interview as an alternative aired on the “Late Present” YouTube channel, the place it rapidly amassed tens of millions of views. The marketing campaign additionally stated it raised $2.5 million inside 24 hours after the interview aired.
In his press convention Wednesday, Carr claimed that Congress handed the equal-time rule so “the media elites in Hollywood and New York” can’t “choose the winners and losers in primaries.”
“There was one partisan candidate who fed this slop to the mainstream nationwide information media and also you guys ran for it,” Carr stated. “I used to be simply laughing, it was clear this story was going to show in some unspecified time in the future and the reality was going to come back out.”
