Sir Keir Starmer might be pressured into a choice over Angela Rayner’s future as early as at present, because the prime minister’s ethics adviser prepares his verdict on the Labour deputy’s tax affairs.
Ms Rayner, who can be the housing secretary, has been beneath mounting strain since she admitted not paying the correct amount of stamp duty on an £800,000 flat in Hove, East Sussex.
She has argued the error was made on account of incorrect recommendation from a conveyancer and two belief legislation consultants, who instructed her she didn’t have to pay the upper price reserved for second house purchases.
Her case was thrust into doubt late on Thursday when the conveyancing agency – Verrico & Associates – said it did not provide advice and had been made “scapegoats” in the political row.

The row started when The Each day Telegraph first claimed Ms Rayner prevented £40,000 in stamp responsibility on the flat in Hove by eradicating her title from the deeds of one other property in Greater Manchester.
