When China’s ruler, Xi Jinping, started calling for “widespread prosperity” in 2021, he made traders nervous. The acknowledged aim was to scale back inequality. However the time period grew to become wrapped up with one thing edgier: a morale-destroying marketing campaign to browbeat billionaires into shows of charity, tighten rules on huge tech companies and curb what Mr Xi known as the “disorderly growth of capital”.
