FREE-DIVING IS a perilous sport. Divers, swimming underwater with out oxygen tanks, incessantly black out from low oxygen and put themselves vulnerable to drowning. Marine mammals resembling seals, in contrast, can spend most of their lives beneath the floor with out working such dangers. A paper printed in Science on March twentieth explains why: seals can apparently sense how a lot oxygen they’ve of their blood and plan their actions accordingly.
