In the late Forties, as the commercial capability of Europe and Japan lay in tatters, America accounted for over half of worldwide manufacturing output, with a lot of the world closely reliant on its wares. Final 12 months it accounted for little over a tenth, and imported $1.2trn extra in merchandise than it exported—to the displeasure of its president.
